Pete Briley releases My Baby — a song written 18 years ago and finally recorded properly
Release date: 14 February
Artist: Pete Briley
Single: My Baby
Pete Briley has released My Baby, a single with an unusually long history. The song was originally written when Briley was just 20 years old and recorded as a rough demo in a short, low-budget studio session. That early version earned him his first ever proper radio spin when it was played by Tom Robinson on BBC Introducing Yorkshire, who saw potential despite the rough and ready recording quality. But then, quietly, the song was never released.
For nearly two decades, My Baby existed only as a handful of demo CDs and a memory of early encouragement. It wasn’t until recently — prompted by a conversation about learning the ukulele — that Briley revisited the song and realised it still had some unfinished business.
Now, 18 years later, My Baby has been fully re-recorded and produced in Briley’s own studio, informed by years of writing, recording, producing, and touring. Rather than reworking the song beyond recognition, the new version preserves its original emotional core while allowing the arrangement, sound, and performance to reflect the experience gained since it was first written.
Sonically, the track leans into warm, analogue textures and tones with songwriting at its heart. Lyrically, it’s interesting to hear the distinctive turns of phrase and storytelling still present in Pete’s music today, but with a certain naivety that just adds to the charm of the whole thing.
Speaking about the release, Briley says:
“It was surreal. It’s easy to forget that every day we don’t quit is another day we make a little progress, but it’s not often you get to go back and directly compare your efforts nearly 20 years apart. Hearing it again, I was impressed at the songwriting chops of that clueless 20 year old kid - and grateful that nearly two decades of performing and recording had given me the tools to realise the vision he had back then.”
My Baby is available on all major streaming platforms from 14 February.

Pete Briley is an overrated upstart with ideas above his station.
With an entrenched fascination for anything that makes a noise, this southern multi-instrumentalist has a knack for combining weird and wonderful instruments, clever chords and unique songwriting techniques with undeniably interesting and engaging melody and thoughtful lyrics.
Whilst he is probably best known for his role in The Outlaw Orchestra (Banjo and Pedal Steel) and touring the country alongside the likes of The Darkness , Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, Reef and Kris Barras Band, Pete Briley's solo output is his playground. You can hear the broad spectrum of influences bleeding through into his songwriting, filtered through his own production and recording techniques and weaved with his distinctive, idiosyncratic way with words
Pete’s debut album was released in 2023 and includes BBC Introducing Track of the Week and Best of 2023, ‘Elvis’, alongside the singles ’Rhonda’, ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’, ‘Sick and Tired’ and ‘Go To Bed’. The album is a smorgasbord of tracks featuring a collection of talented musicians including Dane Campbell (Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons), Jonny Moody, Ryan Smith (The Outlaw Orchestra) and Nebojsa Pavlo and has received really positive feedback.

In 2025 Pete dropped a string of singles - 'Colour', 'Copenhagen', 'All My Friends are Wasters' and 'Cracking the Flacks' have marked a second phase of his artistic evolution as a truly unique creative who is really coming into his own.
